My next GAS purchase is a straight shoot out between two bass guitars:
Squier Jazz standard vs. Yamaha RBX270 * They are the same price [200 UK pounds] * I played 'em both in the shop. Similar necks/action. I couldn't hear any differences in sound

Like you say, there's not a lot to choose between them. Personally I'd go for the Yammy, as I've never been a great fan of Fender's, plus it's different to the rest of the herd. Practically everyone has a P or J bass. Plus like I said a few days ago, Yamaha are one of the few companies than treat the budget instruments, and bass with as much thought as the top end stuff. Dunno if i could say the same for Squire's.

I'd go for the Yamaha every time. I find their budget instruments are far better quality than their Squier equivalents. But hey, you're the one playing it. I suspect that as you become more fluent on the bass you'll start to appreciate the difference between it and the Squiers.

My son has just bought a RBX370. We tried the 270 in the shop, and were a bit disappointed. The example we tried had fret rattle. I would have thought the shops demo model would have been set up the best they could.
The 370 is a very nice instrument, with active tone controls - it is however £50 more.
