Actually the EMI studio the Beatles recorded in was behind what was in America as far as capability but it made superb sounding recordings thanks to the excellent sounding tape machines and microphones. The mixing desk only had bass and treble tone controls but the Beatles and the engineers made amazing recordings through different ways of miking things and applying electronic effects (reverbs, compressors, and filters) both while recording and later mixing.
The worldwide telecast was Sunday June 25, 1967.
'Pet Sounds', released in 1966, actually somewhat inspired 'Sgt. Pepper's...' which was released Thursday June 1, 1967.
The Beatles went from 4-track to 8-track in mid 1968 during the White Album but 8-track machines existed and were used years before that. Much of 'Pet Sounds' was recorded in 1965 on 8-track. Les Paul had an 8-track in the mid 50's.
I think they may have been the first to use a prerecorded 'video' as a replacment for a live performance to promote a record. But, mimed musical performances go back to the early days of film.
I suggest you find the book 'The Beatles Recording Sessions' or 'The Complete Beatles Chronical', both by Mark Lewisohn, and also rent the entire Beatles Anthology on DVD or VHS.
Also maybe find a book called 'Beatles Gear'. I don't have it myself.

Les Paul invented multi-tracking back in the fifties. He also had a hand in designing that classic Gibson solid-body guitar. Music videos in rock started in the fifties, also. The Beatles just refined the art thereof, though they didn't realize it at the time. Jimi's 'Are You Experienced' came out the same time as 'Sgt. Pepper'. No two albums, one being a debut, and released within a week of each other, have been as influential in rock's history since. There are rumours that all that multi-tracked tape hiss inspired Ray Dolby to invent his tape noise reduction systems.
