They pulled themselves together nicely to RECORD Abbey Road, but their output was almost nil after 1968.

In 68, they didn't play much like a band, but at least they were still WRITING.

For some reason it occurred to me tonight how little was written in 69.

By 1/7/69 there are recordings extant of ALL of Let It Be (album) sans Maggie May (not their song) Dig It (Barely a song) - both were first recorded on 1/24/69. And I Me Mine was first recorded 1/8

Across the Universe was first recorded in '67 Don't Let Me Down in '68.

Then we come to Abbey Road. By 1/7/69 Sun King Oh Darling Maxwell Carry That Weight Octopus I Want You Bathroom Window Golden Slumber had all seen their first run through Mr. Mustard & Pam saw theirs in '68

Is it safe to say most of the 18 or so songs recorded for the first time by 1/7 were written in advance of the taping? Probably by the end of '68?

Oh yeah - Her Majesty first saw light of day on 1/9

Late Jan saw the first recording of: Something (28th) Old Brown Shoe (27)

There were also at least a half dozen songs that would appear on later solo albums taped by 1/7/69

That leaves, as far as I can tell only 6 post- Get Back session compositions for the Beatles in 69:

4/14 Ballad of J & Y 5/6 You Never Give Me Your Money 7/7 Here Comes the Sun 7/21 Come Together 7/23 The End 8/1 Because

Sure, the releases were stretched well into 1970, and sure, they had an incredible amount of unused material to start the Get Back session with, but I never realized before that as a group they may have turned out as few as 6 new songs in 1969.

Still turned out nice again, though, huh?

Interesting.

Abbey Road came out in June or July of 1969, though, didn't it? So that still left a half-year to write songs. If the Beatles had stayed together, maybe more would have been written. As it is, though, we don't know what they wrote for the next Beatle album because there wasn't a next Beatle album.

A posting that covers one of my fave years (68), the beatles, AND a ukulele reference. DANG!!!!! great posting, I absolutely loved it. Very insightful, as I had never given this matter much thought myself. Thanks!!! (ram on!)
