Hey gang,

We're into the final stretch here, down to our top four tunes. This is the SemiFinal round, the round where you get to vote on which two songs should go head to head to determine the ultimate Survivor.

A recap, for those who haven't been paying attention. Rather than hunt down the newsgroup's favorite song, we decided to see which song could outlast the others in a series of random head-to-head matchups. We took 256 songs, including a few Anthology, BBC and solo tracks, and randomly paired them off. Each week, half the songs were voted off by the public, and the process repeated with new random pairings. Now we're down just four songs… the two songs that win this week will go up against one another to be the ultimate Survivor.

Anyone can vote! Just reply to this post, or send me an email at

move forward to next week's Finals. Voting will close first thing in the morning (North American time), next Wednesday, October 30.

Last year, 'Help!' went up against 'A Day In The Life' and got crushed, while 'Here Comes The Sun' suffered a narrow 52-48 loss to 'Hey Jude'. This year two of the above songs are still in the running, including ADITL, which went on to be 2000 champ.

'Something', which was eliminated by HCTS in Round 6 last year, is still alive and kickin', and thanks to our handy randomizer (www.randomizer.org) it won't face off against its Abbey Road foe, at least not this round. 'I Am The Walrus' is the next song to take on the champ. Perhaps it'll do better than it did last year when the two songs met, and ADITL brushed on by it in Round 4, beating it 46-24.

These are the four songs that will finish as the top four songs in this game overall. Let's have a look at how they got this far:

'A Day In The Life' beat 'Got To Get You Into My Life' (62-7), 'Things We Said Today' (64-13), 'All You Need Is Love' (69-17), 'Hey Jude' (59-35), 'Rain' (62-36), and 'Strawberry Fields Forever' (54-45). It has outscored its opponents 370-153 (70.7%). In 2000, it finished #1.

'Here Comes The Sun' beat 'A Hard Day's Night' (42-27), 'Taxman' (57-20), 'Back In The U.S.S.R. (77-11), 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' (63-31), 'Paperback Writer' (75-22), and 'Revolution' (70-29). It has outscored its opponents 384-140 (73.3%). In 2000, it finished #3.

'I Am The Walrus' beat 'I Saw Her Standing There' (42-27), 'Mother Nature's Son' (63-14), 'Getting Better' (66-22), 'For No One' (65-29), 'We Can Work It Out' (62-36), and 'Help!' (52-47). It has outscored its opponents 350- 175 (66.7%). In 2000, it finished #18.

'Something' beat 'Octopus' Garden' (63-6), 'Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby' (71-6), 'Drive My Car' (70-17), 'In My Life' (50-43), 'Happiness Is A Warm Gun' (60-38), and 'And Your Bird Can Sing' (69-31). It has outscored its opponents 383-141 (73.1%). In 2000, it finished #5.

Which brings us to today. George's two songs are the strongest performers so far, and one of them is guaranteed to make it to the Finals next week. ADITL won everything pretty easily last year (the closest match was the above-mentioned 22-vote victory margin), and one has to wonder if it will again be chosen as the ultimate Survivor. Its margins of victory have been shrinking, and it wasn't until a final surge Monday and Tuesday this week that it squeaked past into the Semis.

So, I invite everyone to cast a ballot and pick two songs out of the four below. Which matchup would you most like to see in the finals?

1. A Day In The Life vs. Something 2. I Am The Walrus vs. Here Comes The Sun
