I just bought a Pod XT. I have an original Pod, and I read a few reviews saying the old one sounds better. I just tinkered around with it tonight a little, and I don't know if it's me or not, but it seems to sound a little more 'processed' even with the effects off. (I'm not a big effects fan anyway). Has anybody noticed this? Also, does anyone have any opinions on the Vox Tonelab? I'm looking for something to record some pretty heavy guitar sounds with direct to hdd.

Thanks,

This is just my opinion, but I've never liked the sounds of the Pods. They've always sounded processed to me.

As far as the Vox, they sound pretty good. My biggest complaint about them is that you can't combine certain effects like a Univibe and a fuzz effect. Also, the Univibe effect did not sound like a real Univibe, but had this studdery kind of sound. I have no idea what they modeled it after, but it certainly doesn't come across like the sweet wavy sound heard on Bridge of

I'm very happy with the amp modelling in my DigiTech RP300. You should at least give it a try.

I keep seeing posts that say the POD XTs distorted tones sound more artificial than the old POD but that the XTs cleaner tones are a lot better. Im jumping from one thing to another now

I only use my POD XT for the effects. I hate the modeling, for that I still rely on my old Digitech RP-10

Go with the VOX, more realistic than the others and can actually emulate some tube stuff pretty darned well.

Take a look at the Korg Ampworks for guitar. It is basic, but it has better picking dynamics than many of the others I've tried, which gives it a bit more of a natural feel than you might expect from a digital processor. It might not be the most flexible of units, but the presets are pretty much the essential amp styles (Twin Rev, AC30, '70s & '80s & current Marshalls, Boogie, boutique, and tweed). Plenty of cabinet simulators and effects, as well. I use mine as a headphone amp and direct box, but it also serves as a pre-amp and effects processor. I think Musician's Friend just put it on sale for $49 - not bad for something that lists at $179. Could be closing out for a new model.
