Ok, in a post a while back, whilst debating the best album our boys put out, I proffered the obvious 'White album', to which I received the reply ' woulda been a good one disc'. So, in honor of the anniversary of it's release this month (Nov 22 UK, Nov 25 US), What would be THE best White album, sides one and two. Remember, album playing time would have been around 15-20 minutes per side (probably no more than 25 minutes, depending on the mastering) , so keep that in mind, as well. I, of course cannot offer my opinion, as I really do think the entire White album is perfect, from the whining of Pauls jet to the 'good night everybody, everybody, everywhere' at the end, I cannot imagine anything less. So, please, help me out here.

I was gonna stay out of this one until I saw the above post. I totally agree they should have put the leftover George songs on the LP. Specifically, I think 'It's All Too Much' should have been given featured treatment - maybe opening a side.

I think they buried one of their best works by putting 'It's All too Much' on the YS Soundtrack. It's not necessarily the greatest SONG per se, but an audacious, rocking performance (flattened on the YS remix, BTW). I only realized how good the tune was after Steve Hillage turned it into a sort of hippie anthem on his LP 'L,' produced by Todd Rundgren.

Anyway, I'm all for making the White LP a triple - I think excess was the point. They'd already done the perect little pop band bit. I like the fact that this LP has a lot of stuff that some people really HATE - Esp. Side 4 (a lot of Side 2 irks people too, it seems).

I believe vinyl's maximum time space per side is 30 minutes. I think Sir George was partially right (I always felt this album had a few too many sub-par Beatle songs bordering on 'filler' category) but it's too bad they couldn't release an '1 and 1/2 album' version ... but anyhoo:

SIDE 1 Back in the USSR Glass Onion Wild Honey Pie While My Guitar Gently Weeps Blackbird Happiness is a Warm Gun Why Don't We Do It in the Road?

SIDE 2 Birthday Savoy Truffle Mother Nature's Son Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me and My Monkey Cry Baby Cry Yer Blues Helter Skelter

Yes. I love It's All Too Much. It suffers as you say from the flat production (like a lot of George's songs IMO) but as a psychedelic pop tune of the era it's up there with All You Need is Love. The lyrics aren't as strong but the music kicks even harder. Ringo is at his best. His drums are as good as on Rain. The YS soundtrack was a throwaway. They should have put the four 'new' songs on the White LP.

Then again I can just hear the critics: 'would've made a great double album'.

Ha! Good point. And what about Carnival of Light? That could have been included, instead of having to wait 34 years (and counting).

I think the B side to Ob La Di would have been While My Guitar.

The second single would have been Back in the USSR/?Everybody's Got Something to Hide

Very few albums were that long. It would necessitate cutting at a much lower volume.

Yes, there were very few albums that long. The only one I can think of off the top of my head was the nearly-28 minutes long version of 'Dazed and Confused' from Led Zeppelin's live album, 'The Song Remains the Same.' But, I don't recall any loss in volume on that album.
