If you are new to guitar or are pushing your envelope. You will get sore fingers. Like any sports injury, rub ice on your fingertips after playing, for about ten minutes. If you let your blisters swell with fluid, these will eventually fall off. Then it takes longer to develope a good base of firm skin. The ice will deaden the burning. It also helps to have some alcohol on the ice first. Say... a good drink of rum. Ha!

If your fingertips get very sore, stop playing. It is your body telling you, 'Hey, if you keep playing, you are going to get blisters and that is not good.'

Wash your fingers gently in cool water (this will help to stop any infection, plus the cool water will feel good.)

After about 4 - 8 hours, or a nap, etc., you'll find that you can continue playing.

It takes time to build up your fingertips.

BTW, there is one shortcut.......use smaller gauge strings, like Ernie Ball .008's. Yeah, maybe 'real tough' players don't use them, but Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Jimmie Page and a bunch of others do. (Yes, they do change to larger strings for 'heavy lifting.' Just start with 008's and work your way up to larger sizes.

Yikes! Playing until you get blisters?!? Ice sounds good.

FWIW, I also found that rubbing the tips of my fretting fingers in a tiny bit of hand cream softened up the callouses, so they wouldn't get hard, curl, and fall off (as easily or as quickly). Maybe I don't play regularly enough? I try to play every day, but some days get too busy.

Soaking your fingertips in white spirit will harden them up.

I slapped Ernie Ball Super Slinkies on my Strat and I love them. My fingers don't get sore and you can bend the crap out of them and they still keep in tune.

But playing for 8 hours! Man, if only I could I wouldn't be complaining about sore fingers. I would jest be happy I could put that much time aside to play.
