what type of effects should I use to get the 'cliffs of dover' sound? And which pickup position? Thanks?

That is a *very* complex question. Start with a good tube amp, add overdrive (EJ uses TubeDriver, Ibanez TS808 and others), chorus, delay and reverb. He changes pickup positions constantly while playing - watch a video of him if you can find one. He will switch effects, pickup positions, fingering position and pick hand location for a single note and then switch back!

I've found it helpful to roll the volume off just a hair to make the attack a little softer and rounder. Also, learning how to use his 'pick bouncing' approach to picking can be very helpful in getting the right attack on the strings. Try to find hist 1st Hot Licks video - there is a LOT of good stuff on that.
