have allot of experience with amps. Some amps do not have a Master or a Gain especially older Amps. I have a some Questions for you. Is there a reason you want a Twin? they are BIG , HEAVY and LOUD and should be cranked up to get the nice tube sound.( nothing wrong with twins I have one) When your trying amps are you using your guitar? I always bring my own guitar when on a serious hunt. Here is my advice for any gear .When you limit your self to certain brand you decrease your chance of finding just the right piece of equipment. At least you are asking questions and sounds like your willing some money in the right direction so take your time. Right direction being Tubes, They can send a robot to Mars but can't get an IC to sound like a old Vacuum Tube

Twin's have a lot of different sounds depending on the era. Which did you play and like?

It was an old one, but no more info about it. I like it when it is driven with a booster for solo work. Also, I really dig its clean sound.

Thanks Mickey! And do you think they are identical or better than Twins?

Bence,

Regarding the JBL's, I think the Orange's or D120F's are the cream (with the K120's next in line). I'd forgotten about them...so my opinion may be a little bit off and rather besides the point since it is such a truly personal preference type of decision. So, le me preface my 'opinion' by saying that if the JBL's are producing the sound you want, then there's little reason not to go for it (IMHO). But don't buy a pig in a poke if you can help it...try before you buy...Caveat Emptor.

I believe the sound would be a little brighter with the JBL...I think they are a little less 'muddy' then the Jensen's. The Jensen's make for a warmer sound to my ears, but that's a very subjective thing. Not to belabour the point but it bares repeating...this is a VERY clean amp. Mine barely cracks a smile full out (and that'll make your ears bleed). If I do want a little extra highs to cut through the mix, I can always toggle the 'brightness' switch for that channel. If you can, try a few out...take 'em for a ride...see which one sounds good to you. Turn every pot to see if they scratch, jiggle the lead cord in the socket to see if it pops. Test all the knobs for response, test the footswitch, note the make and type of the pre-amp and power tubes. Compare them with the schematic that will be glued in the chassis. Make sure the handle and wheels are well affixed, test the angle legs, check the cloth for rips, check the speaker for wear and rips, check the standbye switch, check the ground switch. If you're buying from another country (or, gasp, online) and playing in Hungary, the chances are quite good that you may have to perform a kitchen mod to make the power supply compatible with your local reality. I suggest you get it done professionally...the caps in this thing are quite big and they can hold quite a jolt if you don't empty them properly before changing the transformer.

Regarding the extra pot on the SF...yup...that be da Masta.

BTW, Fender still makes a very credible 1965 Blackface reissue that can be made to be even more faithfull with some very minor modification...if you're forced to buy 'on-spec', you may want to investigate these new one. They come with a warranty and trust me, these things are way to big for a paper weight, so you don't want to get stuck with a Lemon.

HTH, CS

When researching schems to restore my 79 Twin, I learned just how many versions there are...later 'Master' versions also had a 'pull boost' function. Common wisdom is to just not use either...now the SilverFaced Twins like mine that have "135 Watts" on the back are a totally different beast from the earlier ones and are just LOUD & CLEAN; they aren't candidates for 'blackface tone mods', but benefit from changing the 'output tubes matching' control to a true bias control, like the BF version. Easily done by decent tech, and can help save tube life--or allow you to bias HOT for smokin' tone, and short tube life!
