I recently bought an Epiphone Supernova...excellent guitar, great tone... accoustically all strings are very loud with great sustain...except for the B-string. I have a set of 10's on her now, just replaced the 9's that were on it, but that B-string is very 'weak and tinny' sounding fretted all down the neck and also when struck open, and there is no fret buzz anywhere. The nut seems fine, the bridge seems OK.. ...any other ideas that may bring the volume up to the level of the other strings, or any reason why that particular string sounds so dull?

thanks, people

Is it only while plugged in that you notice this, or is it also acoustically. If it is only when plugged in, you may want to try raising the pole piece of the B string.

The B-string sounds weak when plucked accoustically.

You may have a bad string. It happens.

Just a thought...

You could try putting a way heavier unwound or light wound string in there just to see if the nut or bridge have anything to do with it. I see you went from 9's to 10's already.

Or you could use a small piece of foil that's folded up and put it under the string at the bridge and/or the nut to raise it up a tad and see what happens.

Maybe it's just a matter of having a pro do a little file work.

Good luck!

Since you are talking about its acoustic sound, I have to say that the only things I can think of are:

1. Trouble with the nut or bridge - a good tech can sort this out and resolve it easily. 2. The weakness might just be caused by the resonant characteristics of the wood. Different woods will resonate differently at different frequencies.

I have a really cheap Epi Les Paul Junior that sounds great until you go up the neck on the higher strings. Up there the sustain just stinks. In my case, I am sure that it is due to the cheap wood used, although in your case, the wood should have been pretty good. But, every piece of wood is different, so that might be the reason, and if it is, its unresolvable (short of selling the axe).

How does it sound plugged in? Maybe you can live with the weakness acoustically since you will be plugged in 99.99 % of the time anyway.

I'm betting it's the nut. The string slot is probably cut incorrectly is pinching off the string. I had a similar problem on an Ibanez AS-73.

I recommend that you go to a real luthier and have a bone nut made, the frets leveled and polished, the bridge adjsted, and the intonation set. It'll be the best money you can spend on your guitar.
