Public TV had some 60th special last night. There was a clip of Janice Joplin doing 'Piece of my heart'. The guitar player was playing an SG. Anyone know who this was? Thanks

Later as a solo act, she still had Sam, and she replaced Gurly with Michael Monarch, the original guitar player with Steppenwolf.

See ya,

I wonder which one of BB&HC played at Monterray? Maybe the same....Have to say....One of the worst performances of a geetar player I've ever seen...When I feel down in the dumps, and overly wanky, I just watch that performance.. Terrible, terrible, playing....Just fricking retched... I feel like Joe Satch's lost stepchild after watching that for a while. :/ If he was one of the ones replaced, I can surely see why.... MK

Interesting, as Steppenwolf was alive and well through '69 and '70 (when she died)- did Monarch moonlight back & forth?

Nope, Michael left Steppenwolf right after the second album was recorded. Had a few differences with John Kay, and it was after that when he did the stint with JJ.

On the PBS fundraising special, the guitar player on the Joplin clip was Sam Andrew. The rest of the band looked to me to be the 'Kozmic Blues Band' featured on her 3rd album.

As to James Gurley (the other guitar player in Big Brother), he can be kind of an acquired taste: some wild and outside playing there. I like that kind of thing and like Gurley's playing.

I don't know if that's the one I rag on or not...:/ Of course, it was 1967, so I cut him a little slack... But at Monterray, it was bad news...Or to my ear anyway... Lots of 'bad' notes, kinda sloppy solo, etc...Sounded like a zit faced pud, going out with the queen of the prom... Of course, he may have improved over time... He might be a bad ass now, for all I know... If he's still alive anyway... To be fair, some of the other bands didn't exactly set the world on fire...IE: the canned heat thing, etc... But like I say, it was 1967, and crap like that was grooooovy man....The Who and Jimi stole the show...
