I have been playing guitar for a little over a year, I have three little amps (40watts a piece) and they aren't cutting it any more. I want to have that amazing tone like glenn tipton but beable to crush out some really heavy distortion too. So which would be better, tube or soliid state. And name the type. Id say a $2000 budget

Whoa! Glenn Tipton is the man! Most of his career he's used Marshall tube amps of one generation or another but if you want a death metal tone also I would suggest a DSL/jcm 2000 model. You can get them off of ebay for a pretty reasonable price. They have a deep switch and gain for days but can do almost any kind of hard rock sound you'd want. Can be troublesome though. I've replaced a cap and the power and output transformers on mine. The cap was a must but the tranny's were an upgrade rather than a repair.
If you want to go metal to the bone then find a Mesa triple rectifier. They eat marshall for metal tone. No single amp does it all but those two are the biggies.
If you want to save some fins, take a look at blackstar amps. I hear they're very good for those types of tones and are inexpensive. Having said that, I've never played one. Good luck!
