I fancy a cheapish 12 string - under £400 - any suggestions as to what to look out for ?

I've got a Yamaha apx4a -12, I am very pleased with it.

It is an electro-acoustic, slightly quiet when played acoustically, but with a nice tone. It amplifies well, with a reasonable tone.

Have you had a look at any of the LaSiDo Guitars (Seagull/Norman/S&P)? They're quite plain looking (which i like) and the ones I've played sound great.

Depending on where you look you can get then for quite a good price http://www.guitarstrings.co.uk/ have got a Simon and Patrick 12 string for 299ukp just now.

Luckily my missus is very reasonable when it comes to buying musical instruments. She has to be - she's an oboist, and they ain't cheap.

She was a bit shocked when I went out to buy a guitar and came back with an amplifier that cost more than the guitar.

Mind you, she has since bought a bass for our son, so she can't have been that upset.

Have you looked at Crafter's? The St Giles Music Centre often has one or two. For some reason I can't quite get my head around I've hated every S & P 12-string I've tried. I think they look horrible and sound worse. The fingerboards are very flat, not what I like on a 12, and unbound. Crafters are often quite ornate, but I don't think the sound suffers.

I'm still looking for a 12-string that I really like.
