Jim or other LP experts,

What's the latest word on wiring/pots mods for LPs ? There are many threads on changing out the pots for .010 and .015, splitting the humbuckers into single coils configs, etc...

Can someone post a summary of the most recommended mods as well as links to sites supplying the parts?

What I enjoy reading is some guy saying, I did THIS mod but if I had to do it over again I would do it THIS WAY. I want to cheat a little and do it right the first time

(I'm just looking for the widest range of tone combinations possible since we share the LP among 3 family members and all have different tastes).

Thanks Rog

Change out the caps to 0.047, from 0.022 to get a little more midrange. If you don't like it, it's way too easy to switch back.

If you mean pots instead of caps use 1 MEG. It lets a humbucker scream.

Stick with 250k pots for strats and 500k for humbuckers. If you want to adjust tone use different caps and maybe a high-pass filter on the volume pot(s) that passes frequencies above a given frequency and cuts frequencies below that same frequency.

Those are my choices for tone caps. I like to leave a little bit of mids, so it's not so muddy.

Two options I prefer:

First choice: Both coils parallel: Essentially two single coils sitting right next to each other. Because you have two points of pickup, it isn't EXACTLY single coil tone, but damned near. ...and the good news: NO HUM.

Second choice: Variable single coil: Wire the tone control in the split coil tap to ground, essentially allowing you to dial in a touch of the bucking coil when you want it, or straight single coil. If you don't find yourself using the tone control much on single coil, this is the way to go.

I also recommend treble bleed caps on the volume controls, to maintain bright tone as you dial down volume. Otherwise, they tend to sound muddy when you go below a certain point on the volume control.

Okay, I have LOTS of mods on my LP. If I did it over again, I'd place a lower value on the 'out of phase' option. However, you do get interesting tones when you use it with the other pickup. On its own, it's VERY thin sounding with low output.

I'd skip the split coil entirely, and do the both coils parallel option (see above).

I recommend a 'both p'ups series' option for dark tone with HIGH output.

I might try the PRS setup that uses one coil on the neck p'up with one coil on the bridge p'up. Haven't done that, yet.

It might seem like overkill, especially with four push/pull pots, but I also used shielded wire. It looks like somebody spilled a bowl of spaghetti in there!

I want to cheat a little and

If you experiment with treble bleed caps on the volume and gain levels on your amp, you'll find a spot where decreasing the volume from '10' to about '9.5' or '9' really doesn't affect the volume level at the speakers, but does give a little brighter tone. That's because you are passing some extra highs before the volume control gets muddy on its own.

My LP with four push/pulls does this. But after that one little notch in volume level, you don't notice any lack of lows. It just stays at a fairly constant tone until you get near the '0' setting.
