I have a 1999 Gibson 'The Paul', ebony colour. I've heard them described as 'cost reduced' versions of LP Studio. In fact, I think the one I've got is called an SL (Studio Lite? Studio Limited (colours?)). To me it is a cross between: LP Studio, SG, Junior, and maybe the Melody Maker. No maple cap, so the sound is a bit darker. Still that humbucker LP kinda sound tho.
ISTR seeing some of the early models (1979?) which were natural mahogany, and appeared to be oiled or varnished, rather than painted with lacquer.

lacquer.
The first ones were solid walnut, painted with a few coats of sanding sealer, probably mixed with clear lacquer. It wasn't much of a finish. I sanded mine down to bare wood and tung oiled it, then decided to put a good lacquer finish on it, as I was working in a piano refinishing shop at the time.
The next year they changed the wood to mahogany but it was basically the same guitar with the same cheap finish.

Yea...My brother had one of those back in the 80's...It was pretty decent, and yes, I'd say a hair darker sounding than a regular les paul, but the neck feel was about the same. Good rock n roll geetar.. Heavy and solid as a brick....Good if you get in lots of bar fights...

I've still got my walnut 'The SG'. It has the best neck I've ever played. I put duncan SH-3 pups (three of them) in it with too many knobs and switches. I'd love to get an unbutchered The SG or The Paul of the same vintage and keep it stock.

I' currently playing a 85 FIREBRAND 'the paul' Deluxe . Its a super guitar, bought used off Ebay for $400.00. IMHO , a guitar like this showing the natural wood wih just a tung oil finish , is a 'roots' instrument, nothing but TONE. It has a very warm sound, endless sustain and when properly set up , incredible dynamics. My frets are wore down to where it is almost like playing a fretless guitar. When setting up make sure the strings don't touch the back of bridge , which normally means raising the tailpiece. That simple adjustment gives this bad boy all the sustain and natural dynamics any Player would want.
I run mine through a Fulltone custom fulldrive2 >> into a fender
100/50. Drop dead tone is the result.
when looking for wireing info, the wireing is the same as the SG not the standard les paul scheme, so if replacing pickups , keep that in mind also.
This rig is highly recommended.
