To my sudden surprise I found out that on certain (US) discography lists on the net Pepper is followed by The White Album and not Magical Mystery Tour... That is, when you're looking at UK lists.

Since I'm Dutch I'm used to the original UK releases: I never liked the mess Capitol made of it... Now I always thought that after Rubber Soul - Revolver - Pepper - came Magical Mystery Tour... But now it seems as if MMT wasn't officialy released in the UK which makes it an 'other' album, like Past Masters and Anthology...?

Is this right? Was MMT only released in the US?

It was released as an EP I think, lacking the stuff we find on side 2 in the States. That's my understanding.

MMT was originally issued as a double EP in the UK (and in Europe too).

EMI in the UK eventually realised that the album that was issued in the US was a better idea after people in the UK began buying import copies. So they issued it in that format in the mid-1970s. The CD version also used this new 'official' form.

Ah, yes, a double ep! It's starting to come back to me now... I've forgotten about those ep's altogether! Weird... I'm a Beatle fan since 1976... How could I forget... I'm getting too old: I'd better read that 'What Beatles song do you want played at your funeral?' topic one more time, before it's to late...

double EP.

According to Lewisohn:

(Single, Feb '67) Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane (Album, June '67) Sgt. Pepper (TV broadcast, June '67) All You Need Is Love (Single, July '67) All You Need Is Love/Baby You're A Rich Man (Single, Nov '67) Hello Goodbye/I Am the Walrus (US Album, Nov '67) Magical Mystery Tour (UK EP, Dec. '67): A: Magical Mystery Tour/Your Mother Should Know B: I Am The Walrus C: The Fool On the Hill/Flying D: Blue Jay Way

The EP is part of the canon, as the movie soundtrack. The album is soundtrack + 'latest hits' (& rather overripe strawberries at that). Official or not, it's a bit of a scam if you already owned 4 (or 6) songs.

The Beatles intended to release MMT as a double EP, available in both mono and stereo. In many countries this was the case, and so double EP's can be found from much of Europe and Asia (including Australia), and from parts of South America.

Capitol-USA determined that the record would be more profitable as an LP. Since Capitol had stopped issuing EP's altogether, this was a logical choice for them to make. Some countries

I'm aware of what Lewisohn contains.
