I just posted a technical question on another NG re 'needle time', which was a past agreement with performing unions, to limit the total broadcasting time allotted to commercially produced recordings. I suspect it ended, or was increased around the time of the start of Radio 1 and the legal moves against the offshore pirate radio stations.

One anomally IIRC was the BBC 'session' where the band would often re-record something off their current LP for playing on a John Peel, Bob Harris or Johny Walker prog. These weren't quite 'live' recordings more like 'demos', so limited overdubs and time spent doing them, but otherwise studio conditions, acoustic screens, mutiple microphones etc.

AFAIK some of the 'sessions' being re-broadcast on BBC 6 Music are from that era and I remember hearing some very interesting ones at the original time. Must put in some requests.

There were some nice 'There and Back'-era Jeff Beck tracks on there just after BBC 6 started up... I don't know how quickly they replace stuff, though.
