New Fender Custom Tele. Rosewood Neck, Jumbo Frets

D'Addario Strings - 9s

In the last week I have broken 2 high E strings right about the 7th fret. When the string breaks it looks bent along the string at each fret.

WTF?

Bad batch of strings?

Guitar doing this somehow?

I've used 9s for a long time and have never had this problem. The only difference is that I find it easy to bend with this guitar.

If strings keep breaking at the same spot, I believe the culprit COULD be a burr of some sort on the fret itself. It's happened before...frets might not have been dressed properly when the guitar shipped, something dinged the fret and left a rough spot, anything's possible. I'd take the guitar back where you bought it and have their tech look at it. Maybe he will dress the frets for you at no charge (sometimes they do that).

If the string were breaking at the saddle, I'd replace the saddle...that's just me though...lol

Good luck- Steve

Do you mean that the string is no longer 'straight', that there is a 'divot' where the string would have passed over each fret?

Try relaxing. If you are not used to jumbo frets, you may simply be clamping too hard on the strings. Spend a little time practicing with the absolute minimum effort required to fret notes clearly. This will not only help identify the problem, but it will aid your technique in other subtle ways.

Yeah, the string looks crooked.

I will try to loosen up.

If your accidentally mashing down on the strings, instead of just fretting a note, you can also throw off your intonation a bit, especially with jumbo frets. Ive never heard of strings having fret marks in them like what you describe. Id take a good look at that 7th fret. It may need cleaned up.

Yep even with 6105 frets notes can go sharp if you are heavy handed (fingered).

If your guitar has stainless steel frets that is the problem.

I was repeatedly breaking the high E at the 12th fret because I was using nickel strings on brand new SS frets.

You have to wear down the crown of the fret a tiny bit- just like if you were playing with conventional frets (nickel on nickel).

So when you have breakage problems with new SS frets you have to play with steel strings for a month or two. That fixed it for me.

If you don't have SS frets I typed this for nothing!
