An imminent threat to the US.
What's most amazing to me is not that this lie was told (or maybe they were just severely mistaken??), but that no one here cares.
How's Iran doing today?

Was Clinton lying as well? He said that he fully believed Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.

That's what seemed unbelievable and still seems to be so (along with the whole nuclear angle and the connection to Bin Laden). Bush and co knew what they wanted to do and that was get rid of Saddam (a laudable goal). The WMD thing was born of the need to convince others. They've never really put their heart into the case. At the moment it looks like that case is unravelling, but maybe they'll get lucky and find something somewhere. The stuff with the portable labs is too iffy to stick though.

I'm kinda wondering if UN inspectors shouldn't be sent in to deter planting of 'evidence'. But I guess we don't like the UN.

I've sent Hans Blix to look for it. Sorry about that.
I agree that the 'imminent threat' was trumped up. Following Clinton's comments, I do believe the higher-ups (Bush, Powell, Rumsfeld) had good reason to suspect that Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. Part of the problem was looking for a pretext to invade (for the UN), when in my view, Iraq's violations of the terms of surrender & previous UN resolutions provided the justification. Trying for UN authorization (re: Gulf War I) proved to be a huge mistake. The other problem was measuring the seriousness of the potential nuclear threat. Potential, not imminent.
The blatant lie is the Bin Laden - Hussein connection. Even if such a connection existed, it had yet to materialize into something dangerous. It's quite disturbing that many Americans, according to the polls, think that Hussein had something to do with 9-11.
