I've always lost them before I could find out, but do picks wear out? I've only been playing a couple of years, so please bear with my ignorance.

I have found my picks get thin and break before I can tell they are worn out. As long as it makes the strings vibrate with the sound I like it's still good to go. But I'm sure some expert out there can tell you.

If you play Fender mediums (like I do), you'll find out very quickly than picks *do*, in fact wear out. Mine crack at the tip after a few hours of playing.

Perhaps I'm a bit rough. (But I never get any complaints, if you know what I mean.)

not only do they wear out, but have you ever tried to light one with a match? They go up in flames! Woo!

especially the thin black gibson ones. they literally go in a flash and all that's left is smoke.

***disclaimer - don't try this at home, this material is very combustible***

Is this made from the same stuff as those exploding cue balls? Nitrocellulose?

Mine get rounded at the tip, but they never break. I have an Altoids box full of them, so when they start rounding off I just grab another one.

I use Clayton 1.52mm, in kind of a flourescent white color with a logo similar to the Harley eagle. They're very easy to spot if you drop one on a dark stage.

I love Fender mediums, but I grind them down in two or three songs. The tip gets a notch in it due to the way I tend to pick at an angle rather than flat.
