I recently bought a new cherry-red Epiphone SG - everything was fine until I got it home and tried setting the intonation. All the strings were slightly out - no problem - except for the D string, which is so far out that I can't actually move the saddle any further, and it's *still* not quite there.
Any suggestions?

Or you can flip the little triangle saddles wedge on the bridge, the other way around and the lead edge will get a few mm extra to work with
This was done on my LP so all the saddles wedges are pointing the same way and intonation was achieved OK
IMO I prefer the way it looks with uniform wedges on the bridge

Is it possible to reverse the saddle? The sloping edge may be facing the 'wrong' way an by turning it around you will gain a wee bit more adjustment. See recent posts about Gibson saddle adjustments. HTH John Kelly

Not a great deal to suggest over and above what other folk have said other than....
..remember that intonation is a function of more than just the string length. Materials, density, relationship of the string core size to overwrap etc. are all things that will impart some properties to accurate string intonation.
Having said all of that I'd start afresh with a fresh set of strings of the type and guage that you're normally used to. No point in getting too excited about poor intonation on the shop-bought / supplied strings as the guitar may well have been in stock for some time and had countless sets of try-out's in-store from grubby handed joe-publics before you bought it.
