Hi

I have a mexican Fender Strat, if that makes any difference to this question...

I have been getting a ringing sound on the third string, only. I can get it to go away by raising the action, but rediculously high, and certainly much higher than the other strings. It doesn't ring when played open, but does on virtually every fret.

Any ideas what may be causing this?

Is it a plain or wound 3rd string? The 'standard' staggered polepieces on Strat pickups can cause 'wolf tones' (mainly higher up the neck).

You could try changing to a wound 3rd or lowering the pickup heights.

You might have a slightly high fret somewhere up the neck causing the 'ring'. Does the sound go away above any particular fret? Any strange noises on other strings?

I had one making a 'sitar' sound only when unfretted. It was the way the nut was cut. I think the G string sounds funky to me anyway.

As this one's doing the same thing when the string's fretted, it could be the way the nut's cut

Same as my mexican sambora Fender strat... if I tighten up the locking nut it has this horrible ringing sound on the third string, when played open. I got rid of it not by getting the nut sorted (as i really should) but but not tightening the locking nut too much. As long as the floyd rose is not being abused it stays perfectly in tune and sounds ok, and I love the feel of that guitar. For whammy abuse I got an Ibanez RG548, which is a seriously nice guitar... it's making me start switching allegiances and drop my Gordon Smith membership (not quite, I'll always keep my GS1...

It's a plain string.

It doesn't ring on first fret, nor after about fret 15.

Sounds like a neck relief problem then, i.e. not enough relief. 15th fret is the 'body fret' and unless it's popped (unlikely) I suspect you need to slacken the truss rod slightly.

Did you change to a lighter set of strings recently? Or store the guitar in a different environment? Either could have caused the neck to move slightly.
