Hi, I'm doing some home recording and would appreciate some input on mics for recording vocals.

I have an old Shure Unidyne B mike from the 70s, which still works and is in good condition.

Any opinions on how this compares to an SM-58 for recording vocals ? I'm guessing there may be some old-timers that have experience of both perhaps ?

Is the SM-58 a radically better mike than the Unidyne B, or is the difference not that great for home recording ?

I'm on a tight budget (who isn't !), so I'm wondering if it's worth spending some money on a new mike or putting it towards a better soundcard.

Alternative suggestions for good mics in the same price range as the SM-58 also welcome.

thanks . . .

Yes I have a couple of Unidyne B's too! Still going OK.

This year I got a Sennhiser 835, and I am really please with it, lovely crisp definition.

It was about 70 quid with the lead. Hope that helps.

Thanks guys - I figured the SM-58 would be radically better, but it's nice to have it confirmed before I go spend the dosh.

I've just got a new PC with loads of disk space, and have started using Cubasis VST instead of n-track - Flipping 'eck !

My Midi, Audio and VST instruments all seem to be on different timezones ! If I get it to sound OK in Cubase then export as audio it really goes mental.

I don't suppose anyone knows of a good online tutorial on how to set your ASIO / delay settings up to get consistent results for recording / playback of MIDI, Audio & VST ?

the Sennheiser E 845 is far better than an SM58 and about a fiver cheaper.
