My daughter's started asking for a guitar for her 7th birthday in mid Feb and I was wondering if anyone else here has done similar recently.

If so, I'd appreciate some idea of the price range I should be looking at in order to get something with gentle action, decent intonation and which will hold its pitch.

Thanks in anticipation.

Are you looking at steel-strung acoustic, nylon or a small electric, Mike? There are, I believe, some good 3/4 size acoustics and I think there are also, IIRC, small electrics from East Europe/Poland which I read about a while back in a guitar mag. Whatever you decide, take her with you to try out the guitars in person. Small people can have problems with larger-bodied acoustics when they try to sit with them in 'learning' position at first - you know the stance, guitar tipped way back so that you can watch your fingers as you place them (how I still play if I'm trying to learn something New!) Good luck with what could be a hobby for life. John Kelly

In terms of a full size Steel stringer the Yamaha F310 is supoosed to be the best seller for beginners

You'd probably want it restrung with Extra Lights to make it even easier to play

Not been at this long myself so dont hang you hat on my advice. Ta

I started at age 9 with a crap woolworths guitar and a little tandy battery amp. After having a few lessons and olearning the basics i graduated to a Fender US standard strat at the age of 9 and a half ! And i still have this guitar an its my fave. Id say for a 7 year old go for a squier mini strat of bullet guitar. As an electric will have a better action than a cheap acoustic guitar.
