Hello, I just re-strung one of my guitars and the fourth string (D) is buzzing all the way up (It's worse from the 6th fret or so right to the 21st) Any ideas why? The neck is still pretty straight and all the other strings are fine and the fourth string was fine before. Any ideas why? I have no idea what gauge strings were on before as they were put on when I had it set up a couple of years ago but I've just put a set of 10s on. Thanks,

If the old strings were only a couple of years old, you should put them back on

What sort of guitar is it? If all the other strings are OK, it could be that you just need to tweak the height of the D-string a little. It could also be (likely given the age of the old strings) that the new strings have a different tension and have altered the neck relief which could give the symptoms you mention.

The guitar had been lying in its case for about 1 and a half of those years so it's not as bad as it sounds! The annoying thing is that the strings I took off were still in pretty good condition, I only took them off to clean the guitar up a little and thought I'd re-string. The guitar is a Dean Cadillac and it has a Floyd Rose floating trem and I have no idea how to raise the height of a string on it!

Ah, I think I've seen what could be the problem.... I seem to have strung the 4th string the wrong way round! as the end which is disappearing in to the Floyd Rose is not wound! I'll get my coat after I've changed the string...

Are the 10s a different gauge to what you have used before?

Hrm. you're the second person that had done this and mentioned it in the NG in recent months.

Tim - may I suggest that a floyd-restringing section is added to the UKMG FAQ?

It's _always_ coming up!

While we're at it, I'm still having problems restringing it, I never used to have problems, but today I've tried a set of 9s and a set of 10s. When the 9s were on, the trem was right back as far as it would go, and with the 10s the complete opposite. Every time I've re-strung in the past, the trem has stayed nicely somewhere in the middle...
